Dan Smith Author Pic

I am Daniel Smith and I write non-fiction books across a broad range of subjects, from Sherlock Holmes and Steve Jobs to serendipity and the Second World War Dig for Victory campaign! See my ‘Books’ page for a full list.

As well as writing, I am a freelance editor and have also worked since 1999 on The Statesman’s Yearbook, a geo-political guide to every country in the world (and all the big international organisations too) that has been published annually for over 150 years.

I live with my wife and two children in East London (just above the kink in the Thames if you’re familiar with the Eastenders opening titles). I can often be found researching a new book in the British Library and I’m always on the look out for new stories that I think I might be able to tell well. Anyway, I hope you’ll find something to interest you and feel free to leave me feedback via the ‘Contact’ page.

We spoke on Twitter recently regarding your book re Ardlamont in which you mentioned my great grandfather James Donald.

Looking through some sales pamphlets of his firm Hanna, Donald & Wilson I found one which had a line drawing of the SL ‘Alert’.

It’s particularly big drawing but would give you a scale of the type of boat involved.

If you let me know an email address I can forward.
